This place called prison is much more than one may think. It's more than brick walls, razor wire fences, and correctional punishment. Prison has become my classroom to learn, grow, and change in ways I never thought I would. While I have lost so much, I have found what matters most.
What I hold dear to my heart cannot be taken away. What I discovered in the darkness was revealed under a light—what felt like a giant microscope—and created a renewal within me.
I have been taken away from the world I once knew. This season of prison has become my season of turning. I've realized having a life sentence is not my final destination.
The strongest women I have connected with have known struggle, suffering, addiction, hardship, and grief. Yet, they have dug themselves out from underneath the mess. The mess does not define them. It's the understanding of the mess that fills them with empathy. In lending a helping hand, we build connection, that runs deep, from the struggles we have experienced.
My prison is more than one may think. My life is now a message to live. This message of change, repentance, and transformation is what I live here and now.
I've realized the message is meant to be passed on. In honor of my husband Robert, my children, my family, and all those I have hurt. To lead with love, I have the choice to make the world a better place today. To lead with love, means I can make my children happy. To lead with love, is my journey today.
