Carlos Cano
Facilitator
My name is Carlos Cano, SUD-III, ACRPS, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in progress. My journey has been anything but ordinary. I spent 27 years incarcerated, a life-altering experience that tested my resilience, strength, and sense of purpose. In 2023, I was granted a commutation by Governor Gavin Newsom, and in 2024, I was finally paroled.
Since my release, I have dedicated my life to supporting others who are navigating the challenges of reentry. I work closely with formerly incarcerated individuals, helping them rebuild their lives and find stability, dignity, and hope. My work is deeply informed by my own lived experience, as well as my training in trauma informed care. I understand firsthand the barriers that can hinder aspirations and motivation while facing the everyday stressors of society.
I am also committed to my education and personal growth. I am currently attending California State University, Fresno, where I am pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a minor in Social Sciences. My goal is to continue using both my academic knowledge and life experience to advocate for and empower those who are working toward a second chance.
My story is one of perseverance, transformation, and purpose. I strive every day to turn past adversity into meaningful change for myself and for the community I serve.
